This is the Crypt - the Duke's bodies were moved from here in the 1920's due to water ingress. They were reinterred in Bent Cemetery in Hamilton without anyone's knowlege....
We visited Hamilton Mausoleum and as luck would have it there was a Tour guide from the local museum just about to start a private tour which we were able to join.
Both Colin and I lived in the town of Hamilton which is the next town to Motherwell, where we currently live.
We were able to see inside the Crypt (above) and inside the Chapel which the Duke of Hamilton had commissioned in 1842.
This is the tomb of Alexander, the most flamboyuant of the Dukes of Hamilton.
He wanted an egyptian style tomb and it sat upon this granite slab. The tomb was moved to the Bent Cemetery and legend has it that he is standing upright in the new vault. The sarcophagus was too small for the Duke and when he died rumour has it that they had to break his legs to fit into the tomb.
